Generally, pension and annuity are used interchangeably but strictly speaking Pension - monthly amount received by an employee after retirement from his ex-employer Annuity - periodical payments received on annuity policy but such annuity is also referred to as pension. Under New Pension Scheme - employers, employees and self-employed can contribute towards NPS account and get annuity after retirement. Taxability Govt. employee - commuted pension exempt from tax Non-govt employee - If gratuity received : 1/3rd of commuted is exempt and if gratuity not received : 1/2 of commuted pension is exempt For the employees who receive pension from their ex-employer is fully taxable under the head salaries. Annuity received from insurance company on the annuity policy purchased by you - taxable under Income from other sources Pension received by the dependent of an employee, called family pension - taxable under income from other sources
