The typical notion of students in a particular stream restricted to a career in the same stream is slowly but surely breaking. There’s more overlap in educational and professional paths today than ever before. Therefore, if you’re a student in the science stream who usually focuses on math, physics, chemistry, and biology, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to pursue a career in engineering, medicine, or pure sciences.
Science stream students and ACCA are a unique combination that breaks away from traditional career choices. As the global demand for qualified accountants continues to rise, ACCA offers science students a promising avenue to build diverse and rewarding careers in accounting and finance.
So, how can you do it? Are you eligible for exemptions? What are the benefits of following this career route? Read on as our ACCA specialists break everything down for you in this blog post.

Is Graduation Relevant for ACCA Registration?
No, graduation is not mandatory for ACCA registration. While having a bachelor's degree in a relevant field can be advantageous and may exempt you from certain ACCA exams, it is not a requirement for initial registration.
ACCA after 12th
ACCA primarily examines your secondary education qualifications, such as A-levels or their equivalent, and specific subject requirements like Mathematics and English. To meet ACCA's eligibility criteria, candidates should be at least 18 years old and have completed their higher secondary education with a minimum score of 65% in Mathematics/Accounting and English, along with a cumulative score of at least 50% in all other subjects.
ACCA after 10th
After completing the ACCA Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) diploma, students who have finished their 10th grade can pursue the ACCA course. While the standard ACCA program consists of three levels, those aspiring to join ACCA after the 10th grade have an additional entry point known as the FIA.
In India, students can commence ACCA training right after their 10th grade but are eligible to apply for ACCA registration only after successfully passing their higher secondary exams.
Foundation in Accountancy (FIA) comprises a series of qualifications with flexible exam schedules. You must complete the Foundations in Professionalism module to attain any FIA qualification. FIA includes entry-level awards like:
These awards emphasize essential financial and management accounting skills. They offer students adaptable entry points and certification at each FIA level.
Pursuing ACCA as a Science Student
Although ACCA has historically been linked to backgrounds in business and finance, it is open to students with various educational backgrounds, including those in science.
The qualification opens doors to diverse career opportunities in accounting, finance, auditing, and consulting. By leveraging their analytical and problem-solving abilities, science students are capable of navigating the ACCA curriculum and making valuable contributions to the finance sector. Thus shattering the myth that ACCA is just for commerce students.
Can a Science Student Get Exemptions?
Exemptions are granted based on the relevance of a student's previous educational qualifications and coursework to the ACCA syllabus.
If a science student has completed coursework that aligns with the content of specific ACCA exams, they may be eligible for exemptions from those exams. These exemptions can reduce the number of exams the student needs to complete to obtain the ACCA qualification.
A total of up to nine exemptions are permissible for the ACCA Qualification's Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams. However, exemptions are not permitted for Strategic Professional examinations to retain the integrity of the certification, uphold its stringent requirements, and ensure a uniform learning experience for all students.
Exemptions for the ACCA qualification based on prior qualifications are as follows:
